Each month, we trace a theme from its birth as a subculture on the streets and in the clubs, through to the incarnations on the runway and its interpretations in the stores.
This month we look in to Southern Soundbite.
Take the dance music out of New Orleans, mix it with Midwest blues and blend in a cacophony of influences from the changing face of old time Havana. What’s created is a revolutionary movement that spans the Gulf of Mexico before traveling through Florida via Cuban influenced Miami, north to Chicago and star struck New York, then west to the beaches of San Francisco and glossy, surf devoted Southern California before arriving at destinations worldwide.
It represents a counterculture spirit that can be seen at its origins in the swing of jazz from the ‘Big Easy,’ to the pulsing beat of the defiant culture of song, graffiti and dance collectively known as hip hop.
